Character Name: James T. Kirk
Source: Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness
Race: Human/Terran
OU/AU: OU
Preferred Rank: Captain
Position: Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise

Personality: Jim Kirk is the quintessential space cowboy. He's completely at home in the universe at large, and takes to space like a fish to water. Perhaps it was because he was born in a space shuttle, perhaps it just runs in the family. Whatever the reason, there's nowhere else he'd rather be than aboard his beloved ship, the Enterprise.

Kirk's impulsiveness is one of his key character traits. He acts on emotion rather than logic, making him the foil of his logical Vulcan first officer. This brash behavior borders on recklessness, and sometimes spills over in a dangerous way if he isn't balanced by the rest of his crew. He's a very passionate man, and often chooses to act based on his gut feelings. In many instances, this has led to a complete disregard for the rules, including the Prime Directive in order to preserve Spock's life. It's as if he doesn't think about the consequences of his choices, or simply doesn't believe in them.

He's often been accused of being arrogant. The term seems a little on the extreme side when describing Kirk, for while he does possess a nearly indestructible sort of confidence and self-esteem, he doesn't seem to hold himself in higher regard than anyone else. He isn't competitive, or jealous, and while he might think a person's beliefs or way of life to be barbaric or uncivilized, he doesn't consider himself superior as a person. He can actually be a little altruistic, in that he would exchange his life for any crew member's without hesitation if a situation demanded he do so.

His confidence is also paired with an eternal optimism for the future. He's not afraid to take risks, and he doesn't waste time fretting about the bad things that might happen. If there's a chance a plan will work, even against overwhelming odds, then he sticks to his convictions and follows through. He has a great deal of faith in his ship and his crew, and he's not afraid to trust them to perform their duties and exceed all expectations. Kirk sees the best in others, and encourages them to reach that potential, even if the two are at odds.

Not to say that he won't fire that phaser if he has to, but he's not a trigger happy killer, and he would certainly prefer to aim for the ultimate win-win scenario whenever he can find it...even if it means breaking a few rules along the way.

At times he can be headstrong and belligerent, especially when he's being chided by another. He chafed at his stepfather's presence partially because of these very reasons, and had an instinctive need to assert himself. Even when Pike condemns his actions, Kirk gets defensive and upset. He was genuinely wounded when Spock's actions led to Kirk's suspension and the loss of his command over the Enterprise. On the rare occasion when he resorts to brooding, he does so with alcohol and trying (and failing) to pick up pretty girls.

Though Jim may act like an immature hick at times, he's exceptionally intelligent, and seems to get along well with others who share a similar set of smarts. His experiences as captain have mellowed him out somewhat, and taught him a greater sense of responsibility. Though there isn't much mention of possible associates and friends Kirk might have had at the Academy, one might infer that he got along far better with his professors and superiors than his peers. His friendship with McCoy was almost immediately solid, and they remained friends for the full three years that they spent together at the Academy despite their different pursuits. Even Gaila, the fetching Orion girl that Kirk spent a great deal of time with being wholly inappropriate, was a computer whiz who enabled him with the access he needed to hack the Kobayashi Maru test.

This leads to the next point: Kirk's amorous nature. Contrary to popular belief, Kirk isn't the type to fall easily for a pretty face (although he DOES like them). He's drawn to strong, intelligent women, and it definitely helps if they're easy on the eyes to boot. But even when Kirk isn't aiming for a romance, he never misses a chance to turn on the charm and flirt with women in a playful manner, both young and old. He's more respectful towards those working under his command, and he does try to be professional in that regard.

As prone to his emotions as he is, Kirk isn't easily angered, nor is he the type of person to hold a grudge. He might get irritated or frustrated, but he's not the sort of person to raise his voice and belittle or lecture someone. But just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean it doesn't happen EVER. His attachment to his crew and the people in his life that he truly cares about means that he can be pushed over the edge if something happens to them. He was fully prepared to throw aside everything, even putting the entire population of the Federation at risk, when hunting after John Harrison who murdered Admiral Pike. Even though he was barely kept in check by Spock's cool logic and the urging of his friends, he still greeted Harrison with several punches in the face even though the man had surrendered. His grief is rare, but it can be potent.

He has a friendly nature, and he's actually a pretty nice guy even if he does sling around a lot of bravado and confidence. He'll help people out, and will even break the rules as he sees fit in order to promote his ideals of freedom and happiness. He doesn't actively TRY to break the prime directive, but it's not in his nature to sit back and let people die just because of a non-interference rule.

Jim may not be a perfect man, but he's a strong and capable leader who inspires his crew. He's smart, charismatic, and one of the greatest officers ever to join the ranks of Starfleet.

Powers/Abilities/Unique Items: As a man, Kirk has no special powers or abilities. He is a good captain (most of the time) and an excellent leader (most of the time), and he's skilled in hand to hand combat. His intelligence is very high, and he seems to have a knack for surviving in situations with impossible odds.
